Exam dayCommon Questions
How much does the CISSP exam cost?
The CISSP exam costs $749 USD. (ISC)² occasionally offers discounts and bundles. The fee includes one year of (ISC)² membership ($125 value). If you fail, you can retake after 30 days for another $749. Many employers reimburse CISSP costs given its value to the organization.
Is CISSP worth it in 2025?
Absolutely—if you have the required 5 years of security experience. CISSP is the gold standard for security leadership roles and is required or strongly preferred for Security Architect, Security Manager, and CISO positions at Fortune 500 companies. CISSP holders earn an average of $145K (30% higher than non-certified security professionals). It's the single most valuable security certification for career advancement to management and leadership.
How hard is the CISSP exam?
CISSP is challenging with a 70% first-attempt pass rate. The exam is either CAT (Computerized Adaptive Testing, 125-175 questions, 3 hours) or Linear (250 questions, 6 hours). CISSP tests broad security knowledge across 8 domains at a managerial level—you must 'think like a manager, not a technician.' With 12-16 weeks of focused study (15-20 hours/week), multiple practice exams, and real-world security experience, most candidates pass on their first or second attempt.
Do I need 5 years of experience to take CISSP?
No—you can take the exam without experience, but you won't be certified until you have 5 years of cumulative work experience in 2+ of the 8 CISSP domains. If you pass without experience, you become an '(ISC)² Associate' and have 6 years to gain the required experience. A 4-year college degree or approved credential can waive 1 year (so you'd need 4 years experience instead of 5).
